Renaissance of Photoelasticity - Digital Photoelasticity

June 14, 2018 - 2:00pm to 4:00pm
Location:
Peterson Building 550, Room 126

In the early development of the theory of elasticity, photoelasticity was a natural choice to verify the theoretical development of stress-field solutions. The euphoria generated with the advent of finite elements in solving problems of arbitrary geometry eclipsed to some extent the routine use of photoelasticity in solving day-to-day problems. The developments in the field of image processing and computer hardwawre have now dramatically changed the way optical experiments can be conducted with ease and accuracy. In the last 25 years, the field of digital photoelasticity has matured to compete at the design office. The talk will trace the significant developments in digital photoelasticity and its varied applications ranging from biomechanics to aerospace applications. For phenomenological studies, photoelasticity has always been in the forefront and these also would be highlighted in the talk.

Professor K. Ramesh is currently the Institute Chair Professor at the Department of Applied Mechanics, IIT Madras; and served as department chair from 2005-2009. He has made significant contributions to the advancement of digital photoelasticity. This has resulted in a monograph on Digital Photoelasticity - Advanced Techniques and Applications (2000), Springer, a chapter on Photoelasticity in the Springer Handbook of Experimental Solid Mechanics (2009) and a chapter on Digital Photoelasticity in the book Digital Optical Measurement Techniques and Applications (2015), Artech House London. He has co-authored a book on Mechanical Sciencesi, Narosa Publishing House, India and has contributed a chapter on Experimental Stress Analysis - An Overview in the book Opitcal Methods for Solid Mechanics, Wiley-VCH Verlag. He has over 190 publications, of which two have been reproduced in the Milestone Series oof SPIE. He received the 2012 Zandman award from the Society for Experimental Mechanics for his outstanding research contributions in applications utilizing photoelastic coatings. He is also a Fellow of the Indian National Academy of Engineering.

Professor Ramesh has pioneered a paradigm in engineering education by developing innovative e-Books on Engineering Fracture Mechanics and Experimental Stress Analysis published by IIT Madras. These books are the first of their kind in the world and can be truly called e-Teachers. Professor Ramesh has also developed educational software sucha s PHOTOSOFT_H, MOIRESOFT and CAUSTICSOFT to teach various experimental methods and has recently developed P_SCOPE (TM) - a comprehensive software for understanding whole field stress analysis.
