This study published in Scientific Reports by researchers at the Center for Interdisciplinary Brain Science Research, used functional near-infrared spectroscopy to demonstrate what happens in the brain when we text and drive at the same time. The study confirms that the cellphone draws our attention from driving and the brain imaging shows that cellphones are, indeed, a dangerous distraction.
