This week’s Sustainable Mobility Seminar is titled Vehicle choice modeling: tackling uncertainty with parameterization and validation with Rebecca Levinson, System Analyst, Sandia National Laboratories. This presentation will discuss Sandia National Laboratories’ ParaChoice model and the findings from a study comparing ParaChoice simulations of U.S. light duty vehicle sales from 2010 to mid-2015 to historical sales data. For the first time, the CARS Annual Meeting will be held at the Automotive Innovation Facility. The morning session will feature student research presentations and the afternoon session will involve working sessions on areas we can partner together.
Lauren Aquino Shluzas, Ph.D., Executive Director for Healthcare Design Research at Stanford’s Center for Design Research, and Clinical Assistant Professor in the School of Medicine, will discuss the research she leads that focuses on improving the usability, quality and adoption of healthcare products and systems, at a reduced cost to users and stakeholders.
Stefan Heck, Consulting Professor at the Precourt Institute for Energy at Stanford University, will discuss Transport Revolution: A tenfold shift in productivity. Stefan led the Energy Transformation Collaborative this past academic year which provided students with hands-on experience designing and launching innovative projects to solve the world’s most pressing energy problems. Innovative Transportation Systems, his fall 2014 class, looked at using new technologies and innovative business models to solve Bay Area transportation challenges.
The June 5 workshop, Towards Programming Ethics in Automated Vehicles, brought together experts to discuss how a code of ethics for programming can be applied to increasingly intelligent and automated vehicles. Featured speakers included Chris Gerdes, CARS; Patrick Lin, Cal-Poly; Debra Satz, Stanford Center for Ethics in Society; Shannon Vallor, Santa Clara University; Noah Goodall, Virginia Center for Transportation Innovation and Research, Dan Siciliano, Stanford Law School; Mykel Kochenderfer, Aero Astro and Silvio Savarese, Computer Science.
Former CARS Fellow Bryant Walker Smith will participate in a 90 minute teleconference on self-driving car insurance issues on July 8, 1:00 – 2:30 PM ET. Other panelists include Professor Bob Peterson, Santa Clara University Law School and Brian Soublet, the General Counsel of the California Department of Motor Vehicles, moderated by Hilary Rowen, Partner, Sedgwick LLP. CARS is hosting a joint farewell party for Bryant Walker Smith (Post-Doc in "Legal Aspects of Autonomous Driving", 2011-2014 at Stanford Law School and CARS) and Patrick Lin (Visiting Faculty in "Ethics for Autonomous Vehicles", 2013-2014 at CARS).The casual gathering with remarks from the scholars will take place on Thursday, June 12, 4:30 p.m. at the Volkswagen Automotive Innovation Lab.The extended Stanford community including all CARS affiliates are cordially invited to this event, RSVPs are appreciated to facilitate the planning.
